Kitschmas Gifts- DIY Vintage Wool Dog Coat

DSC_6184 DSC_6177 DSC_6189 DSC_6204Hey guys! This week just flew by didn’t it! I hope you all are getting a good start to celebrating the holidays! Today is my last day of vintage gift making diys. Next week I will be sharing a bunch of new diy gifts with you all. But for today I have saved one of my favorites for last, a diy doggy coat for your favorite pup! This kitschmas gift comes from a vintage 1957 November Everywoman Magazine. I made mine out of vintage wool and soft fleece with vintage tablecloth fabric collars.

Here’s What You Need:

*Wool or Blend for Main Fabric

*Fleece or Minky for Lining

*Coordinating Fabric for Collar

*Velcro

*Pattern

*Paper and Pencil

*Ruler

*Iron

*Sewing Machine and Thread

Here’s The Original:

DSC_5243The first thing you need to do is make your pattern. On a large piece of drawing paper, make a grid according to the chart where each square equals an inch. Draw in your coat pattern. Cut out the paper pattern. Pin it to the fabric. Cut out your pattern pieces. Cut one lining and one main of each piece.

DSC_5244Lay the collar pieces right sides together. Stitch around the collar leaving the neck edge open. Clip curves and turn right side out. Press. Pin the collar face up on the top of the wool jacket piece lining up the neck edges. Pin. Staystitch. Please note, I stitched my collar on backwards the first time, and had to fix it. The fabric should be facing up not the lining.

Press. Now pin the strap onto the middle of one side of the wool coat piece. Stay stitch. Now lay the fleece lining piece over the wool piece with right sides together. Make sure your strap is squished in nicely so you don’t end up sewing through an area you don’t want to. Pin the two jacket pieces together all the way around.

DSC_5247Stitch all the way around the jacket leaving a few inches open for turning. Clip curves. Turn right side out. Press. Top stitich all the way around the jacket. Now you are ready to add the velcro. Mark where you will need the velcro to go on the bottom side of the end of the strap and the top of the jacket. Cut a piece of velcro to fit. Stitch one side of the velcro to the bottom side of the strap and the other side of the velcro to the jacket top where marked. Clip excess threads.

DSC_6170 DSC_6161 DSC_6191 DSC_6198I absolutely adore how these little jackets turned out for Annie and Beau! They look adorable in them! They fit really well and they are nice and warm. Now that I have a pattern, I definitely think I will be making some more of these for my babies. I used vintage fabrics along with my fleece, but you can make them with any kind of fabric you like. So make a coat or two for your favorite furry friends this winter! They will thank you! I’ll be back next week with more Christmas gifts. Until then…

Happy Crafting!
