2-DSC_0024 (2)Summer is in full swing, and we are getting ready to celebrate Independence Day here in the states. When I was little I loved anything with stars and stripes! As far as flags go, we have one of the coolest flag designs in the world! I have been wanting to make a flag pillow for a while now. The other day I was digging in my scrap drawer and realized that I had the perfect scraps to make my pillow. I was quite excited! I had another DIY planned for today, but I just had to hold off so that I could share this fun patriotic pillow with you all. It’s really quite easy, and you can whip one up just in time to enjoy it for the fourth of July!

Here’s What You Need:

*Linen Fabric – about 1/4 to 1/3 of a yard

*Large Scrap Fabric for the back of the pillow

*Pillow Form (Get 10%  off at Pillowcubes.com with code CraftyLife10 )

*Red, Blue and Yellow Scraps

*Basting Spray and Foil

*Scissors

*Ruler

*Marking Pen

*Sewing Machine and Thread

Instructions:

The first thing you need to do is cut out your pieces. Cut your pillow front linen piece to be 10″x17″. Cut two pieces for the back of the pillow to be 10″x 9″. Cut a blue patterned fabric scrap to be 5″x6″. Cut three red fabric strips to be 1″x17″ and two red strips to be 1″x10.5″. Draw stars with a marking pen on the yellow fabric scraps. Cut out your stars.

Next, you need to spray your applique pieces with basting spray. Lay out some tin foil. Lay your applique pieces face down onto the foil and spray the back side with the basting spray.

Now, smooth your blue piece up in the upper left corner of the pillow front piece. Press and smooth your stars onto the blue piece. Then lay out your stripes starting at the bottom of the front piece and spacing them out at about a little over an inch apart.  Iron your appliqued front.

Now you need to sew the appliques down. Stitch along the edges of your stripes and blue rectangle with a small zig zag stitch. Stitch around your stars with a straight stitch.

Take the back pieces and turn under one of the 10″ edges under 1/4″ and then another 1/4″. Stitch down.

Now you are ready to sew your pillow cover. Lay the front pillow piece face up on the table. Lay the back pieces face down onto the front piece. The raw edges should meet with the raw edges of the front piece and the finished edges should be in the middle overlapping a little. Pin all the way around. Sew all the way around the pillow cover with a half-inch seam allowance.

Clip the corners and then turn your pillow cover right side out. Insert your pillow form.

1-DSC_0033 (2)I LOVE how my little flag pillow turned out! I had such a blast making it, I may have to make a union jack one too, since that is another one of my favorite flags. You can change-up the style of this pillow just by the fabrics you use. PillowCubes.com has been so kind as to offer my readers 10% off your next order. Use code CraftyLife10 at checkout. I hope you all will give this one a try sometime. It is fast and fun! I’ll be back soon with another fun DIY. Until then…
