DIY Upcycled Vintage Tablecloth Picnic Blanket

Happy Independence Day everybody! I hope you are all enjoying the day with family and friends! Today I want to share with you this super fast and easy diy that you can make  for your next outdoor picnic or concert. This fun upcycled picnic blanket is made from a vintage tablecloth and a vinyl tablecloth. It gives you a fun style on the top and full protection on the bottom from dewy grass. The best part about this project is that you can make this lovely picnic blanket in less than an hour!

Here’s What You Need:

*Vintage Tablecloth

*Vinyl Tablecloth

*Coordinating thread

*Sewing Machine

*Scissors

*No slip presser foot (optional)

Instructions:

The first thing you need to do is find your tablecloths. Choose your tablecloths that are roughly the same length or width. My vinyl tablecloth was 54″ square and the vintage cloth was 56″ wide. Lay your smaller cloth on top of your larger cloth and smooth out any wrinkles. Put a few pins through both layers. Cut the larger cloth down to size to be the exact size of the smaller cloth. Now, with right sides together sew all the way around the edges with a 1/2″ seam allowance leaving about 5-6″ open for turning. Clip corners. Reach in through the opening and pull the cloths through and right side out. Smooth out and iron on low if you need to. Do not iron on the vinyl as it will melt, iron on the vintage cloth side. Then top stitch all the way around the blanket. Clip threads and you are ready to go. You can use a non slip foot on your machine to help smoothly sew the vinyl. I was able to sew without it, but it was difficult to feed through at times.

I have to say, I love this picnic blanket! I love picnics, but I never like sitting on grass with regular blankets or tablecloths because it always feels damp to me. And if you use a vinyl tablecloth, you either have to deal with crud stuck in the flannel backing from the ground, or sitting on the flannel side which can be itchy. This picnic blanket is a great grab and go seating option to take with you on your next picnic or outdoor concert or movie. Vintage tablecloth fabric is soft and the vinyl on the bottom is really easy to clean. Just pop it in the wash when you get home and hang dry. I hope some of you guys will give this one a try. You’ll love it, it’s so fun and easy! Wishing you all a safe and happy 4th! May it be filled with fun, great food, and awesome fireworks!
