DIY Linen Phone Sleeve and My New Shutterfly Case

IMG 2723 598x6001 DIY Linen Phone Sleeve and My New Shutterfly Case

Hello everyone! Happy Tuesday! So, today I am going to share with you which of my Shutterfly phone case designs I went with, as well as an easy tutorial on how to make a protective sleeve for your phone. I was so excited when I got my new Shutterfly phone case this past week! It is just so ME! I decided to go with the simple chalkboard design with my #1 buddy Beaureguard. The little banner at the bottom means “the little pleasures” en Francais, and it comes from the saying “La vie est faite de petits bonheurs” or “Life is made of little pleasures” and I believe bonheur can also mean happiness or what makes one happy. And I’m sure I speak for most of us when I say my dog makes me happy!

My mom is a photographer, so I am no stranger to photo gifts you can get from a lab. Most of the time the quality in my opinion can be a bit lacking. I have to say though, I am very impressed with this case! The printing quality is fantastic, and it seems to be durable and nicely protective. It is a nice thick polycarbonate plastic that snaps on. When I first bought my phone, I got a designer case which was plastic and within a week the design was scratched off of it. For the last year I have been trying to find a case that was both somewhat protective and cute. This one totally does the trick!

Since I tend to wear a lot of skirts in the spring and summer, which means no pockets, I have made this little padded phone sleeve to safely carry my phone on skirt days. This sleeve is made for my iphone 4, but you can change-up the measurements to suit your phone’s dimensions. This is a really fast and easy project! It is a great way to use up scraps too.

Here’s What You Need:

*Scrap fabric or around 1/8 of a yard of fabric

*Scrap Batting or 1/8 of a yard

*Leather Lacing

*Button

*Thread and Needle

The first thing you need to do is cut your pieces. I made mine for my iphone 4. If you have an iphone 5 you may want to make it about an inch longer. I measured my phone and gave it a couple of extra inches around for seam allowance and wiggle room. So, cut two pieces for the outside front and back and two pieces for the lining at 4.5×7″. Cut two pieces of the batting at 4.5X7″. If you’d like a little pocket, cut a piece of your lining fabric to be 4.5×5″. I added a patch to the front piece of my sleeve. If you are adding any patch or embellishment sew it on now. Next, lay the outside pieces front and back on the front and back pieces of your batting face up. Stitch the batting to the fabric with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Now, take your pocket piece and turn it under 1/8″ and press. Turn the top under again 1/2″ and stitch down close to the edge where you turned it under on the wrong side. Now you are ready to stitch together your sleeve. Place the pocket piece on the front of your front sleeve face up and sandwich it in between the front and back pieces. The front and back should be right sides together. Stitch all the way around the three sides with a half-inch seam allowance leaving the top open. Stitch the lining pieces together the same way, making sure that the right sides are together. Clip corners and trim the seam allowance down a little on both. Turn the front piece right side out. Fold a small piece of leather lacing in half and stitch down to the pocket side of your outside sleeve. Now, shimmy your outside sleeve into the lining so that right sides are facing. Carefully stitch around the top with a quarter-inch seam allowance leaving an inch or so for turning. Now, pull your outside and lining out through the hole in the top. Press. Stuff the lining into the outer sleeve. Now top stitch around the top about an eighth inch away from the edge. Pull the loop over the top and mark where to put your button. Hand stitch the button on the back side. And that’s it. Pretty easy eh?

I absolutely ADORE my new phone case and padded sleeve! I love that it is a perfect size for scraps. I paired up natural linen with a scrap from an old vintage cutter tablecloth, and a retro quilting fabric for the pocket and the lining. This little sleeve is so versatile, you can really customize it to your style and taste by the patterns and fabric choices you use. This sleeve fits perfectly in the large pocket of my purse. In hind sight I wish I had sewn a loop of ribbon in the side seam so I could attach a clip to it and clip in on the handle of my bag. Will definitely have to try that next time. I hope I have inspired some of you to try out this little phone sleeve. You will love it! And definitely go check out Shutterfly’s IPhone cases Here. They are so fun and easy to customize. There are plenty of design options. They are on sale at 20% off right now too, so you can snag one for under $30. Pretty cool! I’ll be back Thursday with another fun DIY. Until then…

Happy Crafting!

*Disclosure: I was given a promotional code for a phone case from Shutterfly. No other compensation was given. All opinions are 100% my own. No foolin’, this phone case is awesome!

Happy Friday everyone! Welcome to day ten of my 14 Days of Love special. Today I have a pattern and tutorial for these sweet little lovey dovey felt chickens. I have always loved birds, but I am fast becoming a chicken lady. There’s nothing like looking out the window and seeing my gals tail up pecking in the yard. They are fantastic pets, and they warm my heart. My little felt hen and rooster are easy to assemble with fabric glue, although you could sew them instead if you have the time. I really enjoyed making these little guys! They whip up pretty fast too.

Here’s What You Need:

*Felt (2-3 colors)

*Pattern

*Embroidery Floss

*Feathers

*Thick gauge wire

*Fabric Glue

*Wire Tinsel Garland

*Pipe Cleaners

*1/4″ Dowel

*Paint

*Ribbon, trim, embellishments…

Instructions:

The first thing you need to do is cut out all of your pattern pieces. Draw in or embroider the eyes on the front head pieces. Now on the wrong side of the front head piece glue on the comb, waddle, and beak down facing out. Now glue the wing onto the front body piece. Next cut a long strip of wire and bend it in half loosely. Glue the wire into the back body where you want your legs to be. Glue a couple of feathers onto the back body tail end. Then put a generous amount of glue onto the back body piece over the wire and the feather ends too and glue the top body to the back body. Now add glue to the back head piece, and glue the body down onto the back head piece. Add more glue to the head and glue the top head to the back sandwiching in the body. Now you are ready to add the chickens to the dowel. I painted my dowel with regular craft paint. Once it dries lay out your hen and rooster where you like. I tried to make mine look like they were kissing. Wrap the wire around the dowel three times and then snip to about 1/2 inch or so and wrap around the leg at the bottom. Now twist three pipe cleaners together. Lay it out over the chickens and their perch and clip the excess pipe cleaner off. Now wrap the wire heart tinsel around the pipe cleaners leaving about an inch and a half on each end. Wrap this excess wire from the tinsel around each end of the dowel so the chickens are framed below the dome of the tinsel  wrapped pipe cleaner. Embellish with little hearts, flowers, etc. Now loop a length of ribbon and tie a few inches from the top for hanging.

I really like my little hen and rooster. They look like they love each other, don’t they? You could make these as little birds as well if you leave off the comb and waddle pieces. You can also change up the look by using different color felts, and embellishments. I think these little chickens would look so sweet hanging from a window or on a door. You could also use them as a mobile and hang over a crib or bed for your little one. I hope you all enjoy this free pattern! Be sure to tune in next week for more Valentine’s fun, including a giveaway. Have a fantastic weekend!

Vintage Finds of the Week- Febuary 4th

Hello Everyone! Welcome to day four of my 14 Days of Love Valentine’s Special! Today I am going to share my Valentine’s wreath with you. I have always been head over heels for yarn wreathes! I love the texture of them! I made one back in the fall, which you can see Here, and had a great time making it! I have had these little fluffy white dog vintage salt and pepper shakers for a while now, and have been wanting to incorporate them into a wreath. So, I thought they would be perfect for a Valentine’s wreath since they are so cute and lovey dovey looking. I found that I enjoyed making this one even more than my previous wreath!

Here’s What You Need:

*Straw Wreath Form

*Yarn about 2 skeins

*Felt Flowers

*Valentine heart picks

*Wood cut out plaque

*Pipe Cleaners

*Tinsel Heart Wire (not exactly sure what this stuff is called)

*Vintage salt and pepper shakers, millenary birds, etc…

*Hot Glue

*Ribbon

IMG 0415 596x6001 14 Days of Love Valentines Yarn Wreath

IMG 0416 800x4501 14 Days of Love Valentines Yarn Wreath

Instructions:

To view more detailed instructions on the process of a yarn wrapped wreath visit my first wreath tutorial here. Start by wrapping your wreath form completely in yarn and tie off the ends or glue them down. To make the platform for your figures you first need to drill a couple of tiny holes with your smallest drill bit into the top on each side for the pipe cleaner you will put in later. Now prime and paint your platform. I sealed mine with matte modge podge. Let dry. Glue your choice of figures onto the middle of the platform. Take two pipe cleaners and twist together at the ends to make one longer pipe cleaner. Insert the pipe cleaner into one side of the platform, then bend it around and trim the end to where you want it. Now, take the pipe cleaner and wrap the wired tinsel around it, then insert both ends into the holes in your platform making a nice rounded shape over your figures. Now put a generous of hot glue onto the bottom of your platform and glue into place in the bottom curve of your wreath. Arrange your flowers and heart picks in the way you like best, then glue them all down to your wreath covering any gaps between the platform and the wreath form. Tie a length of ribbon to the top of your wreath and hang.

IMG 0483 396x600 14 Days of Love Valentines Yarn Wreath

IMG 0484 414x600 14 Days of Love Valentines Yarn Wreath

I absolutely LOVE how this wreath turned out! I may just have to keep it around inside throughout the year somewhere. These wreathes are quite a bit of work, but in the end they are well worth the effort. You can use other things than vintage salt and pepper shakers too. Birds would be really sweet too, or maybe a hand stitched felt creature.  I hope I have inspired some of you to give this one a try. You will seriously have a blast! Be sure to tune in tomorrow for another fun valentine DIY! Until then…

Eleven years ago yesterday my husband and I had our first date. We were so young back then, just out of highschool, but right from the start we knew we were something special. My husband is seriously the best, and I love him to bits! Always have , always will! Since we’ve been married for a while now we don’t really count our dating anniversary as our anniversary, but we do like to go out on a date to celebrate the years we’ve spent together. So, if I could pick a perfect date night ensemble it would have to be this one! This set is inspired by one of my favorite date night songs, one of our songs; “Nothin’ Can Change This Love” by the great Sam Cooke. Any night could be a date night with Sam! If you have never heard the song look him up on ITunes. He’s just lovely!

DIY Cheap and Chic Bottlecap Table

before after 800x424 DIY Cheap and Chic Bottlecap Table

Today I have a really fun furniture re-do for you! I am going to show you how to take an old IKEA Lack side table and add a super funky and cute bottle cap top. This DIY is a blast to make! It was more labor intensive than most of my projects, but hey, it was so worth the time. The best thing about this redo is that it was pretty inexpensive. The table had at one time cost me a whole $8. Depending on whether you have bottle caps or have to buy them, the cost for the rest of the supplies was under $30. Making this table was the most fun I’ve had with a project in a while! So gather your supplies gals and let’s make a table!

Here’s What You Will Need:

*IKEA Lack Side Table

*169 or more bottle caps

*.75×1.5″ 8 Foot Piece of Pine Wood

*1/2″ Plywood

*Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive

*Liquid Nails

*Wood Glue

*Wood Putty or Plastic

*Trim Nailer and Nails

*Circular Saw

*Mitre Saw

*Paint

*Painters Tape

*Grout

*Grout float

*Bucket

*Sponge

*Screws

*Screwdriver

1 table 599x600 DIY Cheap and Chic Bottlecap Table

2 legs 665x600 DIY Cheap and Chic Bottlecap Table

Step 1: Prep Table- Remove the legs from your table. Wipe down the top and make sure it doesn’t have any spots of gunk or dirt

3 measure 493x600 DIY Cheap and Chic Bottlecap Table

4 straight edge 800x538 DIY Cheap and Chic Bottlecap Table

5 cut circular saw 800x544 DIY Cheap and Chic Bottlecap Table

Step 2: Cut Backer Board- First we’re going to cut the board the bottle caps are going to be glued down to. We want the board to be small enough to allow for the band of pine to go around it. The pine is 1.5″, so we’ll take a little over three inches off of the square measurement of the table and a little extra to give it some wiggle room. The table top is 22×22″ so we take off 3″, we’re left with 19″ and with wiggle room your board should be 18.875×18.875″ square. So, mark your measurements on your board with a straight edge and cut off excess with a circular saw. You can also ask the people at the hardware store to cut your plywood down in store if you need to.

Step 2: Glue Plywood- Mark the border of your plywood on your tabletop. Measure in and mark 1.5″ in all the way around the edge of the table top. Next, squirt a generous amount of construction adhesive onto the tabletop inside those markings. Then carefully glue down the plywood to the tabletop. Let glue set for a few minutes. Screw in a few long screws around the edges and in the middle for extra strength.

Step 3: Glue Bottlecaps- Working from the outside in, squirt dabs of liquid nails and place bottle caps onto dabs of the adhesive and squish down. It helps to lay out the outer band of bottle caps to give you a guide of how to place the other bottle caps to keep rows somewhat uniform. Let the glue set for a few days or at least 24 hours.

Step 4: Cut Pine for Band- Measure from outside edge to outside edge and cut four pieces with a 45 degree angle on a mitre saw. Be careful and try to be as precise as you can. The more precise a cut you have, the better your mitred corner will be.

Nail down band piece using your trim nailer. Then wipe off excess glue that has seeped out. Repeat with the other pieces until you have a beautiful band around your table top. Lightly sand and putty the nail holes if you like.

Step 5: Paint- Carefully tape off the sides of the tabletop with painters tape. Press firmly and rub your nail into the crease between the band and tabletop so you have a nice edge. Paint band in your desired color. Remove the painters tape while the paint is still wet. Let the paint dry and cure for at least a few hours. It is important to make sure your tape is really good and secure. I waited for a little while to paint after taping and did not repress my tape down, and my lines were not perfect.

Step 6: Grout: Re-assemble the table legs. Be sure to tape off your painted band before you grout. I used ready-made grout that we happened to have on hand, but mixing grout yourself is not hard to do, just follow the instructions on the package. Mix up your grout, then scoop some up on your float and slap it down onto the tabletop. Then carefully push it in and around diagonally around and between bottle caps. You then use the float on its side and smooth the top until you have the gout even and full across how you like it. Next, take a sponge and bucket of water. Dunk the sponge and then wring out most of the water. Wipe down on top and across the grout until the bottle caps are clear and visible and the grout is even like you like it. I have to say, I have used grout many times before with tile projects, and grouting bottle caps is not easy. It takes some care. My gout lines did not turn out picture perfect, but I’m happy with the results as this was my first time using bottle caps. Let grout set up for 24 hours, then go over top again with a damp sponge to remove any residue left by the grout. Remove your tape and wipe down band. And there you have it! You just finished an awesome table!

This table was such a fun project to make! I really love how it turned out! It makes a great addition to my living room, and I know I will enjoy it for years to come! And a super big “thanks” to Johnnie from Saved By Love Creations for inviting me to guest post this project on her wonderful blog! She has tons of great DIY’s on her site, and I am proud to have my table among them!

Here is my top ten playlist for the month. This month I chose my top ten based around songs about America, my America. Each one of these song ensembles is created on how the lyrics or feeling of a song inspires me. Music and style are my main sources of inspiration, and I hope this collection inspires you, your ipod, and perhaps even your next shopping trip! Hope you all enjoy!
