These really could not get any easier! The first thing you do is punch out a bunch of hearts. Keep your patterns separated if you are going for a specific design repeat like I did. You will need a front and back to create one heart. So, if you want your bunting to have a strand of nine hearts, you would punch eighteen. For the bunting you first want to cut a length of twine. Now put a piece of double stick tape on the wrong side of a heart. Lay your twine in the middle of the heart on top of the tape. Now cover the bottom heart with a top heart, sandwiching the twine in between the two. You want to have the wrong sides of the paper facing in and taped up with the twine, and the right sides facing out. Once you have a line long enough you are ready to tie. My top strand I made to be seven hearts across, the bottom strand is nine hearts across. Tie a knot after the last heart on each side. Now split the twine strands in half and untwist until you have two separate strands. Tie one side onto one of your skewers about an inch from the top. Then tie the other side to the other skewer about an inch from the top. You can use one strand, or you can tie another strand of hearts on like you did the first. Snip excess threads. Now tie a little ribbon onto each side where you tied the heart strands. Your cake bunting is now finished. The picks are easy too! All you do is sandwich a toothpick in between two hearts with some double stick tape. It’s just like the bunting, but instead of twine in the middle you have a toothpick for each heart. Easy peasy!

Today I have a super easy and fun DIY for you, a mini flag bunting. This cute little patriotic bunting is an easy decoration to make for your upcoming Independence Day parties or barbeques. And the best part is that this craft is not only fun and easy, but also really inexpensive!

Here’s what you need:

*Felt (I used printed felt I bought from I Love Felt 88 on Etsy Here)

*Scissors

*Twine or Yarn

*Glue (I used hot glue)

*Paper, ruler, and pencil

*Fabric marking pen

Step 1: Draw out your template- Using your ruler and pencil, measure and draw your template. I wanted my flags to be 1″x1 1/4″. Fold your paper in half, then measure down from the fold the length of the flag(1 1/4″) and draw a line, measure across the width of the flag(1″), then draw another line down to the length of the flag(1 1/4″). Draw a line across the bottom so you end up with a rectangular shape. Now, from the bottom measure up 1/2″, and draw a line. Then mark the center of the flag on that line(1/2″), and draw a line on each side from the middle to the bottom edges to make the ^ shape of the bottom of the flag. Cut out template and unfold.

Step 2: Mark flags- Using a tracing pencil or fabric marker, trace around the paper template and repeat until you have the number of flags you wish to use. Cut out flags with fabric scissors.

Step 3: Glue- Cut a piece of twine or yarn the length you wish. Leave a tail for hanging or tying, then put a little glue on one half of your flag, slide under twine, and then close other end and squeeze to glue sides together. Repeat with other flags until you have the length you wish.

This craft is so easy and economical, and you can decorate with it any time, for any occasion by just changing your felt colors. I love the versatility! And this would be a great craft to do with your kids. Make a long bunting to decorate your mantel, or make a little one and tie it to two skewers to decorate a cake or pie display. So grab your glue gun, and let’s get crafting!

Birdcages and Buntings

I had bought this birdcage last year at Michaels. It was originaly a creamy color and kinda distressed looking, very shabby chic. I’ve used it for months to hold earrings, and it was displayed on my bright white Ikea shelving in the master bedroom. It never quite looked right to me, so I decided to spray it white so that it would go with my shelves, but also be simple enough to be used to display earrings at craft shows. Since I have recently made a new jewelry storage from vintage dishes ( I’ll be posting pics from that soon,) I decided to use the birdcage for a new decoration for the bedroom, but it looked a bit bare, so I made this little mini fabric bunting to go on it. I think it’s cute and so easy to make. I’ll be posting a tutorial on how to make one in my upcoming Valentine’s Day 14 day countdown.
