Vintage Fabric Woven Upcycled Easter Basket

DSC_7527 DSC_7530 DSC_7536Happy Friday everybody! Spring is in the air around here and we are enjoying the weather and being outside. Since Easter is just around the corner I thought I would share an upcycled Easter basket with you guys. My friends at Gifts.com were wonderful to supply me with a lovely basket to upcycle! So, today I am going to show you how easy it is to take a plain open weave basket and add some fabric to make it special and springy.

Here’s What You Need:

*Basket with an open weave

*An Old Bedsheet or Fabric you have on hand

*Scissors

*Fabric Glue and Ribbon (optional)

Instructions:

DSC_7497The first thing you need to do is cut your strips of fabric. I cut a few strips from a vintage faded bedsheet I had in my stash. It is really easy to make strips with sheets. You just cut about an inch straight up from the bottom, then you can take the “tail” and rip the strip all the way up the side of the sheet to form your strips.

DSC_7498Now you will need to grab your basket and get to weaving. If your basket has a liner inside, remove it.

DSC_7499Take one end of one of your bedsheet strips and tie it to the corner of the basket. Turn the knot so the tail is on the inside of the basket.

DSC_7500Now take the other end of the strip and bring it through the first vertical strip of your basket. Then go over the basket strip and then bring the strip back through the back. Continue weaving the strip through the basket going over a basket strip and then under the next one. Once you go all the way around once, change up your pattern to be opposite of the first row around. So if you went under over in your first ring, then go over under in your second.

DSC_7501When your strip starts to get short and you need more, add another strip by tying the ends together. Push the tails to the inside of the basket and continue weaving.

DSC_7502Weave your basket with your bedsheet strips until you reach the top, then glue down the end with a little dab of fabric glue.

DSC_7503 DSC_7504If you have a liner and you want to change up the ties, first cut the original ties off. Then cut ribbon strips to the same size as the original ties. Then glue the ribbon ends to ends of the fabric where the ties were. Tie your liner back in your basket and you are ready to fill it.

DSC_7526 DSC_7537 DSC_7533I really LOVE how this basket turned out! I think it makes a sweet little Easter basket! The best thing about this basket is that it can be used all year in my home for storage after the Easter holiday. So instead of buying a basket from a big box store this year, go green and give this upcycled diy a try. It is easy, inexpensive, and you can make it in an hour or less. Be sure to check out Gifts.com for some amazing gift baskets and goodies perfect for gifting all year! And you can also check out their Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest pages for more upcycling diys, and gift ideas! I’ll be back next week with more diy fun.

xoxo,

Ashlee
