DIY Vintage Milk Cap Dimensional Art

Hi guys! Today I am going to share one of my favorite new diy’s with you. I have been seeing a lot of button art lately like this button monogram from American Crafts. I love the dimensionality of it, and I wanted to create some form of dimensional shadowboxed art for my living room. I originally thought of making a button heart, but the vintage buttons I have lying around are just not that adorable right now. So I decided to give it a try with some vintage milk bottle caps that I had bought a few weeks back for making ornaments during the holidays. Vintage milkcaps are so fun and colorful and they have a nice thick feel like chipboard so they are easy to work with and maintain their shape. This project is pretty simple and you can definitely make one of these in just an hour or so, which makes this a great project for any day of the week!

Here’s What You Need:

*Vintage Milk Bottle Caps ( I bought mine here)

*12×12 Shadowbox Frame (I bought mine at JoAnn’s)

*Sheet of 12×12 Scrapbook Paper

*Piece of cardstock paper for heart

*Hot Glue and Glue Gun

*Paper Straws or little dowels cut into small pieces

Instructions:

The first thing you need to do is draw out your heart on your cardstock and cut it out. Lay out some milk caps onto the heart to cover the border and a few in the middle. Glue the caps down with hot glue. Now start to build up the open areas with caps and glue down. Once all your gaps are filled in, add caps here and there and glue down when you like where they are. There is no real method to the layout, you just glue them down as you go. Take your straw and cut off a few small pieces that are varying lengths, but all smaller than the depth of your shadowed depth area of your frame. Glue a cap to one end of the straw then glue the other end of the straw onto a cap on the heart to create the most dimensional pieces. Then fill in where you want to add more subtle dimension by layering milk caps. Once you have your heart all glued down and perfect, center the heart on the 12×12 scrapbook paper and glue the heart down. If your paper is thin, you can glue the paper down to some chipboard. Now, insert your milk cap art into your frame and close it up. And that’s it, hang or display in your favorite spot and enjoy!

I LOVE how this Milk Cap art turned out! I have to say it was a lot of fun to make too, definitely one of my favorite projects! This project is really one of a kind because it is random in the pattern, so no two will be alike. You can totally customize the design by choosing your own shape and design of the paper and frame. It would be great for a teens room, or a fun living room or kitchen. It would also be great as a customized handmade gift for someone special. I hope some of you will give this one a try, you’ll totally love it! I’ll be back next week with more fun diy projects. Until then….

Happy Crafting!

Hi Mary! The little paws belong to my constant companion, Beaureguard the Italian greyhound. He is always trying to help me out, whether I need it or not 😉

Great idea. I love the colors. The link to where you purchased the caps doesn’t seem to be active. Where did you find them?
