DIY Mini Vintage Thimble Planter Necklaces

Hey guys! I hope you all are having a great day! I recently have scored a large bunch of vintage Women’s Day magazines and have spent the day pouring over them. So.Much.Fun! I am thinking of doing a craft from the magazines like once a month. Maybe starting it at Christmas. What do you guys think? Awesome or Eh? Today I am going to share one of my favorite new projects with you, thimble flowerpot necklaces. These fun necklaces made with air dry clay and vintage thimbles are so fun to make! And, you’ll love how simple they are!

Here’s What You Need-

*Vintage Thimbles, or one you have lying around on hand

*Air Dry Clay

*Paint

*Tiny Twigs

*Moss ( I believe the variety I had was called reindeer moss, it’s a bright green)

*Hot Glue or Craft Glue

*Chain

*Jump Rings

*Jewelry Pliers

*Drill with a small bit, like 1/16 or 1/8th

Instructions:

The first thing you want to do is drill your thimble. Mark a dot on either side of the thimble at the top. Carefully drill a hole into each side close to the top where you marked your dot. If you are clumsy like me, you may want to hold the thimble in some pliers like channel locks. Next you are ready to make the mushrooms. Pinch off a tiny bit of air dry clay from the block. You can either mold a cone shape with your fingers and then make a hole in the bottom with your twig for the stem, or you can mold your cone directly onto your twig. I made my cone shape and then once it was dry I glued the twig inside the hole I made in the bottom. Fill your thimble 3/4 of the way with air dry clay. Push a twig into the clay so that there will be a hole to glue your mushroom when the clay dries. Once your clay is dry, you will need to paint the mushrooms. Use a super skinny paintbrush to paint the dots onto the mushroom. Glue the mushroom to the twig if you didn’t mold the clay around the twig. Then glue the twig with the mushroom top into the hole in the clay that you made earlier in the thimble. Next glue a little bit of moss onto the top of the clay inside the thimble covering the clay. Now you are ready to make your pot into a necklace. Cut a length of chain. I made mine long so it goes right over my head, but you can make your chain shorter and add a clasp in the back. So, cut your chain, and then attach the chain to each side of the thimble pot where you drilled your holes earlier. Attach the chain with a jump ring on each side. Now you are ready to wear…

I LOVE this little necklace! It makes me happy! It is like wearing a tiny little garden with you all day. You can customize this little necklace by the colors you choose, or even experiment with some little miniatures like flowers or mini animals. Other than the drying time for the clay, this project is super fast to whip up. It is a lot of fun to wear. These little necklaces would make great gifts for your gardening girlfriends as well as anyone with a little bit of an eclectic style. I hope some of you guys will give this one a try, you’ll have a blast! I’ll be back on Thursday with another fun DIY. Until then….

Happy Crafting!

Love this idea…My Mom used to subscribe to “McCalls” magazine years ago and I always liked to look thru them because they had craft projects in addition to sewing projects. I still have some of the “pages” in my craft ideas folder…more for the sentimental value than the content…hmmm, I’ll have to go through those soon and see if there is something I can create now! Please post more…

I LOVE those old craft projects! I am definitely planning on sharing some vintage craft projects starting this November! If you end up making some retro projects, send me a pic, I’d love to see, and share:)

Ok, love everything you do and love this project. Gotta know where the dress and even the shirt both with birds on them, came from! I might actually be willing to be in a few pics if my clothes had birds on them!

Jennifer, you are so sweet! Thank you! I am a little obsessed with birds 🙂 I bought both the dress and the shirt from Target. I never go sleeveless, but one of my favorite things about this dress is that the back has an opening in the shape of a heart. IT’s precious! Go get yourself one, you’ll love it 😉
