DIY Vintage Wallpaper Tray

One of my favorite things in the whole world is vintage wallpaper! The prints are just fantastic! And I almost love them as much as vintage fabrics and linens. I bought some wallpaper books and scraps off of Etsy recently, and have just been itchin’ to make something with them. I have been wanting to make a tray to use on my vanity in my bedroom, or for entertaining. So when I found this frame at the thrift store for a dollar, I knew I had to give it a try.

Here’s What You Need:
*Vintage Wallpaper Scraps
*Frame
*Paint
*Two Drawer Pulls
*Drill and dremmel
*Bits to fit your screw and pull type
*Glass to fit frame if it doesn’t have any already
*Matboard
*Wallpaper Glue or Modge Podge and a brush

Instructions:

You can choose to either paint your frame first and then drill the holes for the pulls or the other way around. I painted my frame first. I chose to sink my drawer pulls a little into the face of the frame since the profile of my frame was not flat. First we measured and marked where we wanted the handles. Then we drilled into the face frame about an eighth of an inch down with a bit that was the same size as the outside of the pulls to sink them into the frame instead of sitting on top so they would sit more flush. We did the same thing on the bottom to sink the screw heads. Then drill into the center with a drill bit the same width as the screws for the pulls. Screw the drawer pulls onto the frame. If your screws are too long, you can cut them down with a dremmel. If you aren’t real familiar with using a dremmel I would suggest just buying new screws to fit. Touch up any paint that was scratched while assembling the handles. Now you are ready to make the collage. Cut a piece of matboard or chipboard to fit the inside of your frame. Now start laying out pieces and cutting them to fit where you like them. Now glue them down to the board by painting a thin layer of wallpaper glue onto the wallpaper strip and smooth out into place. Keep glueing pieces down until you have covered your board. Now assemble your frame like you would a picture withΒ theΒ glass in first and close up the back. Now you have a fun tray!

I LOVE my tray! It is really sweet, and I had a lot of fun doing the collage part! I like that it is a collage of scraps since there are so many patterns that I just adore, however, you could do the same with a single piece of wallpaper cut to size. What I love most about this project is that is fast and easy, but it was also so inexpensive to make. And it looks like something you could buy at a boutique. I definitely urge you all to give this one a try with your favorite wallpaper! You’ll have a blast!
Happy Crafting!
